With the final days of summer in front of us, my family spent a couple days at Minnesota State Fair earlier this week. I especially enjoyed watching the children as they took in the various activities and worked hard to find as many free things as they could. It created memories for them that they will take with them all their life. But as with anything fun we do in life, this event brings with it a bit of a let down. At the end of the fun days at the fair, I got into my car and sat in traffic. I was tired. I had spent a fair amount of money (no pun intended). It is a whole year before the fair will be back on again. A day at the fair can make you forget about all of the activities that are coming up in the coming weeks. How will we ever make it that many days without deep fried dough? And even more importantly, how will we ever find time to slow down and enjoy the day like we did there during the rest of the year?
If you were to go out and ask random people about their schedule right now, they would almost all say that they are really busy. We are busy people. But in the midst of our busy lives, it is good and healthy to stop and enjoy the day – yes, even the days you are not at the fair. We need to connect with God each day and stay fresh.
As a new season starts, why not take time to notice some of the little things around you? Why not take a different way home or take a walk around the lake? Go ahead and set the work down for a few minutes to be refreshed again. What is something that gives your soul energy? Make some time for it in the margins of your life and watch how God shows up in that.
Stopping for a little while each day just to make a connection with God outside of your normal setting will go a long way in keeping you from going from busy to burn out.
"Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faith." Isaiah 40:30-31
